I'm thinking OP with the vibrato problem actually has a tension problem. My advice: sans violin, stand as comfortably as you can. Take your left hand, and touch your thumb to your second finger. Everything should feel loose. Take your right hand, your left hand shouldn't resist. Use RH and move your LH in vibrato motion, make sure you're not resisting. In slow motion with the violin, rest your LH third finger on the string, and relax your wrist back, and then move it back up. Check for tension.

I agree with the last post. My advice for vibrato is to chill, both physically and mentally, and make your sound as characteristic (grotesque, gorgeous, brilliant, pale, earthy, etc.) as possible. Work on vibrato as for variety needed but stressing out about it has the opposite effect. Different bodies and different set-ups have different natural preferences for certain types of vibrato. Musicality is the primary objective. Happy Music Making!

There is nothing wrong with an arm vibrato. If you can do both wrist and arm vibrato that's awesome, but if you can't there's nothing wrong with arm vib. It's best to do the one that comes most naturally to you. @ the poster before, If you have a tense arm, it's probably because you are death gripping the violin with your thumb and left hand so your arm locks up. The arm can be as loose as the wrist vibrato. Also if you want a nice wide slow vibrato, arm is usually better than wrist for that.

YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE ARM VIBRATO. I AM AS STIFF AS A BRICK. MY TEACHER IS MAKING ME LEARN (I am not seventeen and planning on applying to conservatories in DECEMBER. YIKES!) A MIX BETWEEN WRIST AND FINGER VIBRATO AND IT SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER THAN ARM WHEN YOU GET IT RIGHT. AND IT FEELS NICE CAUSE IT'S LOOSIE GOOSIE. DO NOT LEARN ARM. AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE. Oh, that post reminds me. My teacher had started me on learning vibrato probably when I was 11. I kept trying and trying but couldn't do it like she said. We'd been trying for months on end. One day I knew I was doing a variation of sorts, so I showed her, and she just facepalmed. I had taught myself arm vibrato, and am still to this day wrist vibrato illiterate.
